APERTURA / What is Apertura?

APERTURA is organised annualy by ARTE_MADRID as a celebration of art and culture. Every September, events take place throughout day and night with 44 contemporary art galleries simultaneously inaugurating their exhibitions. It includes a complete programme of activities in museums, art centres and galleries that boosts Spanish plastic arts and cultural industries on both a national and international scale. Apertura broadens Madrid's cultural offer along the lines of the Berlin Gallery Weekend or Choices Collectors Weekend.

Madrid is also the capital of contemporary art. 50% of Spanish galleries belonging to the Consortium of Contemporary Art Galleries –the National Association- union are based in the city. 44 spaces open to the most contemporary art. It is followed by Barcelona with 7 spaces and Palma de Mallorca with 6.

The third edition of APERTURA, organised by the Association of Galleries ARTE_MADRID, attracts to the city collectors, experts and curators from all over the world searching for the finest exhibitions of both established and emerging artists from the local and international scene.

In this year's edition, taking place beetween 11th and 14th of September, attendees to APERTURA 2014 will enjoy long opening hours in the galleries. One of this edition’s many novelties is the brunch that will be offered on Saturday at all partcipating galleries. APERTURA's guests will also be able to take part in the Gallery Walks. These guided tours will be taken each day around the districts in which the galleries congregate, allowing visitors an in depth view of the spaces and exhibitions.

All in all, each September APERTURA makes Madrid  the hub of contemporary art. An essential benchmark in the international cultural agenda.
